What are Wago Connectors?

Wago Connectors are also known as Wago terminals or Wago clamps. These are electrical connectors used to securely and safely connect or terminate electrical wires without the need for soldering, using a standard connector or wire nuts. They are designed to simplify the process of making electrical connections by allowing wires to be inserted into the connector and then clamped down using a lever. This eliminates the need for twisting wires together, which is required when using wire nuts. Wago connectors are commonly used in various electrical applications (industrial, commercial, and residential) due to their reliability, ease of use, and ability to create strong and durable connections.

Being Accepted in the industry

These connectors were not initially accepted into the electrical industry because there were questions as to how they would perform. Several strength tests were done to see how much weight it would take to make the connectors fail. On several tests done by different groups of electricians, the average weight to make the Wagos fail was around 60 lbs. This was done using a solid 12 ga wire, so a smaller ga. wire would hold less weight. Then, several tests were done running 60 amps through the connectors. The connector melted at over 250 deg, which took well over 40 minutes. The same tests were run using standard wire nuts and the results came up similar. Wago connectors are now accepted in most electrical applications because of the positive outcomes of these tests.

Ease of use

One great feature of Wago Connectors is how easy they are to use. There are several types of connectors; connectors where you can connect 2 wires or up to 5. You can also mix small wires with larger wires, as well as stranded wires with solid wires. Traditional wire nuts require different sizes depending on the size of the wire. It’s not recommended to mix stranded wires with solid wires because the stranded wire tends to fall apart and the connection does not work as intended. Wago connectors are also reusable, which a lot of homeowners appreciate.

How I use Wago Connectors

I do a lot of electrical projects at home, consisting of adding receptacles around the house or wiring up switches. I recently used Wago connectors to tap into my house to a receptacle inside to tap power to my backyard. The connectors are smaller, so they fit well into the junction box and leave more room for the wire.

I also do a lot of bench testing; I test lights for my Jeep or lights for the house. I also do bench testing for small motors to make sure they are functioning correctly. I have a power supply, which I use for testing along with the Wago connectors. During my testing period, I temporarily connect them. When I’m finished, I remove the connection and the wire looks nearly untouched.
